Diverticula are small pouches that can form in the wall of the large bowel. When they cause symptoms, this is known as diverticular disease. If the pouches become inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis.

Symptoms may include lower abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or rectal bleeding. Diverticulitis can cause more severe pain, fever, nausea and changes in bowel habits.

Many cases can be managed without surgery. However, recurrent attacks, abscesses, narrowing or other complications may require specialist surgical assessment.
