An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anal canal. It commonly causes sharp or burning pain during a bowel movement, which may continue afterwards. You may also notice bright-red blood on the toilet paper or stool.
Fissures are often associated with constipation, hard stools or persistent diarrhoea. Some heal with changes to bowel habits and prescribed medication, while persistent fissures may require further treatment.
A colorectal assessment can confirm the diagnosis, exclude other causes and identify the most suitable treatment for you.
