Detailed examination of the colon and rectum

A colonoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the large bowel using a thin, flexible tube with a small camera.

It may be recommended to investigate rectal bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, abdominal symptoms, unexplained anaemia or a family history of bowel disease. It is also used for bowel surveillance and to detect colorectal polyps or cancer.

During the procedure, tissue samples can be taken and many polyps can be removed for laboratory analysis. You will receive instructions about bowel preparation, sedation, possible risks and what to expect after the examination.
