Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are enlarged blood vessels that develop inside or around the anus. They are common and may cause bright-red bleeding, itching, discomfort, swelling or a lump that appears when opening your bowels.

Constipation, straining, pregnancy and childbirth can increase the likelihood of developing haemorrhoids. However, rectal bleeding should not automatically be assumed to be caused by piles, as other conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Our female colorectal specialists can confirm the diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment, from lifestyle changes and medication to minimally invasive procedures or surgery.
