Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, can develop in the colon or rectum. Symptoms may include rectal bleeding, a persistent change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or fatigue caused by anaemia.

These symptoms are common and do not necessarily mean that you have cancer. However, they should be investigated because early diagnosis can make treatment more effective.

Diagnosis may involve blood and stool tests, colonoscopy, scans and a biopsy. When cancer is confirmed, treatment is planned by a multidisciplinary team and may include surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, depending on its location and stage.
