Bowel polyps are small growths that develop on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Most are harmless and cause no symptoms, but some types can develop into bowel cancer over time.

Polyps may be discovered during bowel-cancer screening or a colonoscopy performed to investigate bleeding, anaemia or changes in bowel habits. Most can be removed during the colonoscopy and examined in a laboratory.

Depending on the number, size and type of polyps found, you may be advised to have further monitoring or treatment. Larger or complex polyps may require advanced endoscopic removal or surgery.
