Pilonidal disease develops in the crease between the buttocks, usually near the base of the spine. A small tunnel or opening forms in the skin and may contain hair or skin debris.

It may cause no symptoms until it becomes infected. An infected pilonidal sinus can lead to pain, redness, swelling, bleeding or discharge. Some people experience repeated infections or develop an abscess.

Treatment depends on the severity and frequency of your symptoms. Options may include drainage of an abscess or surgery to remove or treat the affected sinus.
