An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that develops between the anal canal and the skin near the anus. It often forms following an anal abscess or infection.

Symptoms can include ongoing pain, swelling, skin irritation and discharge of pus or blood from an opening near the anus. Symptoms may improve temporarily but often return because an anal fistula rarely heals permanently without treatment.
